Giant Clams Seeded in Bohol's Marine Protected Areas

A report from Bohol’s information arm, Effective Development Communication Unit (EDCom), the 200 giant clams are intended for seeding in selected Marine Protected Areas (MPA) of the province which have recorded a higher level of management than other MPAs.

Locally known as “taclobos”, these giant clams were transferred from the seas of Pangasinan through a C-130 plane of the Philippine Air Force.

This is the first step of the Bohol Provincial Government’s efforts to repopulate the seas of Bohol with the said clam species which are listed as vulnerable in the 2004 IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species.

It is also hoped that, with the eventual repopulation of giant clams in the province, the program will also address issues on the low productivity and high prices of fishery products, and provide livelihood to the members of people’s organizations and MPA management councils of Bohol.

The seeding of the giant clams or ‘taclobos’ will be done in a MPA in Barangay Bingag in the town of Dauis.

The consolidated effort for the protection and propagation of these giant clams is part of the AFP’s thrusts and mandate to help and protect the environment.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Luga will also attend at the community organizing training closing ceremony in Bohol Cultural Center prior to the seeding of the giant clams in the afternoon.
