The agreement establishes a framework for scientific and technical cooperation, covering fisheries, aquaculture, and food and nutritional security. It provides for joint research initiatives, knowledge exchange, and the development of training and capacity-building programmes.

The MoU, which was signed by Dr Essam Yassin Mohammed, director general of WorldFish, and Dr Mustafa Altuğ Atalay, director general of TAGEM, also envisions joint organisation of technical exchanges, symposia, and conferences to advance innovation and knowledge sharing.

Dr Mohammed said, in a press release, that the partnership reflects their shared commitment to advancing aquatic food science for resilient, climate-smart food systems.

“In working with Türkiye’s leading agricultural research agency, we can accelerate innovations that improve livelihoods, nutrition, and environmental sustainability in both our regions and beyond,” he added.

“This step will enhance further cooperation with WorldFish and TAGEM. We believe this will contribute to marine agriculture research especially in the area of capacity building, fisheries aquaculture and biodiversity. In the short- and medium-term, I also believe that this cooperation will support global research and innovation,” added Dr Atalay.

Through this partnership, WorldFish and TAGEM aim to advance science, innovation, and policy solutions that ensure sustainable aquatic food systems, delivering better nutrition, livelihoods, and environmental outcomes for people and the planet.
