The congress took place from 12 to 17 July in Madison, Wisconsin, and was attended by more than 20 representatives from Hendrix Genetics’ business units.
During an aquaculture session, Dr Katharina Correa, a geneticist in Hendrix Genetics’ salmonids business unit who supports Troutlodge’s operations in Chile, presented the study, “Accounting for Different Ploidy Levels in Trout Genetic Evaluations in a Commercial Breeding Program”.
The research was conducted by specialists from Hendrix Genetics and Troutlodge in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research. It examines how phenotypic information collected from triploid trout can be incorporated into genetic evaluations of diploid broodstock.
Triploid fish have three sets of chromosomes and are generally sterile. They are used in parts of the trout sector partly because sterility can prevent sexual maturation and reduce the likelihood of escaped farmed fish breeding with wild populations. However, incorporating their information into commercial genetic models has traditionally been complex.
The researchers developed an approach designed to:
- Improve the selection accuracy for broodstock
- Integrate triploid data without distorting evaluations
- Optimise genetic progress in key production traits
