Sustainable Feed: Nutritional Requirements Discussed

Trout Crustaceans Nutrition +33 more

GENERAL - The third module of the University of St Andrews online Postgraduate Diploma/MSc course in Sustainable Aquaculture hosted by TheFishSite.com, examines sustainability in terms of feed production and nutrition.

Simon Wadsworth (Module Co-ordinator) said: Aquaculture requires renewable sources of feed and this is a key factor in the future growth and sustainability of the industry." The module will assess the nutrient requirements of a number of commercially important fish and shrimp species.

"Until recently these nutrients have been largely reliant upon the use of fish meal and oil as the raw materials. However, sustained research over many years has allowed the replacement of significant proportions of these marine nutrients with terrestrial sources, reducing fish meal from 75 per cent to less than 25 per cent in some of the main aquaculture diets.

Students will study the development of functional feeds which are used in aquaculture operations globally to increase the health, welfare and performance of cultured species. Feed management practices, diet production and the effects of nutrition related diseases will also be assessed.
