Mara Renewables, a Canada-based biotechnology company, produces algae-based omega-3 ingredients used in human and animal nutrition, including aquafeed. The new investment will support the expansion of Mara’s algae-derived omega-3 production, as well as research and development to improve scale and efficiency. The company aims to address supply chain limitations in global nutrition by offering a fish-free alternative to traditional omega-3 sources.

Despite increasing demand, global omega-3 supply primarily sourced from wild-caught fish struggles to meet needs. Mara’s alternative, which uses precision fermentation to grow microalgae in controlled environments, provides a scalable and fish-free source of DHA. This approach bypasses traditional marine-based supply chains and reduces reliance on wild fisheries.

“At Mara, we are committed to transforming the way the world sources vital nutrients like omega-3s. Our partnership with S2G strengthens our ability to meet growing global demand with reliable, high-quality alternatives that protect aquatic ecosystems, reduce reliance on wild fisheries and support the health of people and animals alike,” said Harry Boot, chief executive officer of Mara, in a press release.

According to the company, its technology enables a more consistent and sustainable supply of omega-3 for use in applications such as infant formula, dietary supplements, functional foods, aquaculture and animal feed. In 2024, Mara’s production reportedly offset the equivalent of 6.7 billion anchovies from the omega-3 supply chain.

“In our view, Mara is solving a fundamental supply chain challenge with precision and scale. They have built an end-to-end platform that delivers consistent, clean and high-quality omega-3s without relying on depleted fisheries,” said Larsen Mettler, managing director of S2G’s oceans strategy.

Looking ahead, the company is focused on strengthening its global manufacturing footprint through strategic partnerships, making omega‑3 a seamless part of daily life by supporting customers in developing enjoyable, easy-to-consume products for direct and indirect human nutrition, and deepening commercial collaborations across key global markets.
