Scottish fish fryers say that the use of fresh locally-sourced haddock is one of the key reasons why they won half of this year’s Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Awards – after The Bay in Stonehaven won Independent Takeaway Fish & Chip Shop of the Year and the Good Catch Award; while Frankies in Shetland scooped the From Field to Fryer Award, the Young Fish Fryer of the Year Award and the Amanda Seafoods Challenge Award, at this year’s Seafish-sponsored event.
Alan Coghill, President of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, said: "This recognition of the quality, freshness and local availability of Scottish haddock is warmly welcomed and highlights the value of this sustainably fished stock by Scottish fishermen.
“In these times of ever increasing imports from outside the EU it is particularly gratifying to find this support. The industry is going through difficult times at present with poor regulations, low quayside prices and intense and totally unjustified pressure from environmentalists.
“Our fishermen do an incredibly hard job, often fishing in difficult conditions to provide a healthy protein rich food for the UK public and it is encouraging to see this importance being recognised by the fish frying sector who deal directly with consumers."
