Tristan Hugh-Jones of Loch Ryan Oysters will represent Scotland in the World Oyster Opening Championships in Galway, having won this year’s Scottish Oyster Shucking Championships.

Hugh-Jones, who won the inaugural title in 2017, beat 16 of the country’s finest shuckers, from venues including Rogano, City of Glasgow College, Connors Restaurant and White Horse Oyster Bar.

The event, which took place on 14 September as part of the third Stranraer Oyster Festival, was organised by Seafood Scotland and hosted by the Guinness world record oyster opener, Patrick McMurray.

Clare MacDougall, trade marketing manager at Seafood Scotland, said: “It’s great to see the ShuckOff gaining momentum and attracting more chefs and people from within the industry each year.

“The competition is great fun with a lot of competitive spirit between the shuckers, but it’s also a great way to meet more people in the industry and be part of the growing Scottish seafood sector.”
