New director announced for CMFRI

Following the retirement of Dr Gopalakrishnan as ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute director, the role has been assumed by seasoned industry researcher Dr Grinson George.

Dr Grinson George has been announced as the new director of the India-based ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) following the retirement of his predecessor, Dr Gopalakrishnan, earlier this week. Prior to his appointment to the role, Dr George lead the Marine Biodiversity and Environment Management Division at CMFRI.

A seasoned fishery researcher with over two decades of experience, Dr George enters his new role well equipped, holding expertise in areas such as fishery resource management, marine biodiversity, environment management, fisheries oceanography, remote sensing and climate change.

Having led multiple high impact research projects as principal investigator at the national and international level, and with the funding support of various agencies such as the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and India-UK Water Quality Initiatives, Dr George is set to continue the CMFRI’s legacy as one of India’s leading fisheries and aquaculture research institutes.
