Scientists from the internationally-acclaimed Institute won the 'Innovative Collaboration Award' at the Scottish Enterprise Life Sciences Awards earlier this year, recognised for their £4 million project to boost production in the Scottish salmon farming industry.

Led by Professor Hervé Migaud, Deputy Director at the Institute, scientists have been working with Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre, Marine Harvest Scotland, Scottish Sea Farms and Biomar to use wrasse to reduce the sea lice challenge to salmon.

Meanwhile, Dr Sonia Rey Planellas has also joined forces with the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre to examine the health and welfare of lumpfish in hatchery production and sea pens, and improve welfare for the species.

The Institute also saw a major four-year study worth almost €7 million get underway. Led by Professor Trevor Telfer, the four-year study will help establish new strategies and models for sustainable growth in the European aquaculture industry.

The team were also awarded funding to help establish Scotland’s first mussel hatchery in Scalloway in a bid to secure a prosperous future for the Scottish mussel industry.

What’s more, the Institute has recently grown in strength with the appointment of a new Professor of Nutrition, Brett Glencross, who will build on the research and expertise of the nutrition group and expand their interests into shrimp farming and other Asian aquaculture sectors.
