The first line-up of speakers has been announced by organisers of North Sea Seaweed - an annual event hosted by the non-profit seaweed industry organisation North Sea Farmers.

Over the course of the two-day event in The Hague, which is set to take place on 5 and 6 June 2024, prominent figures from the seaweed industry will share the most recent insights and guide discussions regarding the future trajectory of the seaweed sector.

During the “Plenary Inspiration Sessions” keynote speakers will explore the potential of the European seaweed farming industry, along with the processes necessary to reach EU goals for seaweed production at the member state level.

During this section, keynote speakers such as Maris Stulgis, Directorate General of EU Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and Donné Slangen, Director General of Fisheries and Nature will deliver engaging talks exploring these themes.

A session highlighting seaweed production will feature leading farmers and figures in the European algae industry, who will come together to discuss and align the goals and prioritise the technical challenges within the industry. Haik Van Exel, managing director of seaweed biotech company Hortimare, will expound on the company’s sustainable and circular approach to production.

The event will host an array of further sessions, exploring themes within the seaweed industry from animal feeds to biomaterials. A session focussing on the potential of seaweeds as biostimulants for agriculture will feature Franck Hennequart, director of research and innovation at Algaia - a seaweed processing specialist.

In addition to a varied list of keynote speakers, the event will host events for clients, investors, and partners involved in the seaweed sector to network, along with market exhibitions to showcase the latest seaweed innovations.

The event is set to take place on 5 and 6 June 2024, with registration available here.
