Veramaris, a producer of an algae-based alternative feed ingredient, has completed the necessary three-year registration process for its incorporation into aquafeeds for Canadian salmon farming. As the first authorisation of its kind, this marks a significant step towards increased sustainability within the Canadian salmonid aquaculture industry.

The authorisation will allow Veramaris to provide the Canadian salmon industry with an environmentally responsible source of essential nutrients for fish health and welfare. The algal oil, produced in Nebraska, USA, is a regional solution that contributes to the industry's move towards adopting alternative Omega-3 sources and reducing dependency on fish oil as a primary source of essential fatty acids for salmon feed.

“The Canadian registration of Veramaris' algal oil is key to supporting the rising global demand for alternative sources of Omega-3 EPA & DHA. Securing authorisation in Canada is an important step not only for Veramaris but also for the entire aquaculture industry," says Gertjan de Koning, chief executive officer at Veramaris.

The authorisation of the algal oil for use in aquafeeds has also been celebrated by members of the Canadian fish farming sector, who recognise the registration as a significant milestone for the industry.

“Canadian aquaculture is at a pivotal point, and Veramaris' algal oil brings us closer to achieving our sustainability aspirations. This registration not only highlights the strategic value of aquaculture in Canada but also demonstrates the industry’s commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship,” said Tim Kennedy, President of the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance.
