Brazil Launches Plan to Combat Illegal Fishing

BRAZIL - To ensure a sustainable future for the national fisheries sector, the Government will work to close illegal fishing.

The National Plan to Combat Illegal Fishing aims to trigger a series of actions oriented to industrial and artisanal fishermen, changing the direction of the sector in the country.

The plan will require vessel registration and proof of authorisation for the fishing method used.

"There are cases where the fish is caught illegally on our coast, sent to other countries and then imported," said Mutsuo Asano Filho, director of industrial fishing of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture and coordinator of the group responsible for the strategic plan.
