Organised by the FAO’s General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and the Greek Ministry for Rural Development and Food, the conference is set to play an important role in determining the future of the aquaculture industry within the region.
The event will bring together aquaculture experts, industry stakeholders, and senior decision-makers from across the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions to review the progress made by the industry since the first major regional conference, which was held in 2014. The conference participants will also convene to discuss the actions needed to achieve the objectives set out by the GFCM 2030 strategy, which aims to develop sustainable fisheries and aquaculture within the region.
Another key point of discussion at the conference will be the unique vulnerabilities, compounded by climate change, population growth and economic instability, which are placing mounting pressure on the region’s food systems.
Side events will complement the thematic session discussions and will feature various salient issues, including the use of artificial intelligence in the sector, the creation of networks, and the promotion of women in aquaculture and small-scale production. The conference will also host live demonstrations and stands showcasing emerging technology and the work of relevant aquaculture organisations.
Registration for the 2024 Regional Aquaculture Conference is open until 25 October, 2024.
