Global experts, policymakers and investors are set to converge in Kochi, India, for the seventh India International Seaweed Expo and Summit on 29-30 January. Hosted at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI), the event aims to explore the economic and environmental potential of the seaweed sector.
The two-day summit will bring together delegates from ten nations – including the US, Russia, Australia, France and Indonesia – to discuss seaweed as a "sunrise sector" for India. High-level representatives from the ministry of agriculture and fisheries will join industry leaders to examine how the industry can bolster food security and sustainable growth.
Jointly organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), CMFRI and CSIR-Central Salt Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), the gathering serves as a global platform for technology transfer and commercial collaboration. The programme includes technical sessions covering bioprospecting, nutraceuticals and climate resilience, culminating in a roadmap to establish India as a major player in the global seaweed economy.
Beyond policy and science, the Expo will function as a major B2B networking platform, bringing together leading industrial players from India and abroad with investors and entrepreneurs, fostering partnerships and business opportunities across the seaweed value chain.
To engage with the wider public, the event will offer a unique opportunity to experience seaweed-based delicacies and explore a wide range of seaweed-derived products, including health supplements, functional foods, cosmetics and lifestyle products. Interactive stalls and displays will give the public a hands-on understanding of how seaweed is fast emerging as a sustainable solution for food security, livelihoods and green growth.
