From 4 to 9 May the capital of British Columbia welcomed 723 registered delegates from 43 countries, gathering to share knowledge, spark collaboration, and celebrate all things macroalgal.
With 18 exhibitors and 26 sponsors, the event organisers said that the symposium showcased the growing momentum behind seaweed as a force for innovation and sustainability. Under the theme “Building on the Past to Propel the Seaweed Momentum,” it featured over 500 academic presentations, along with hands-on workshops, cultural events, networking opportunities and industry showcases.
“This symposium marks not just a milestone for the seaweed sector, but a global reaffirmation of the importance of marine ecosystems, sustainable blue economy solutions, and international collaboration,” said Helena Abreu, past president of the International Seaweed Association (ISA). “The ISS is more than just a conference – it’s a reunion of passionate individuals committed to advancing seaweed science, business, and stewardship.”
Highlights of the week-long gathering included:
- Scientific sessions spotlighting research, business models, and environmental solutions
- Workshops hosted by global leaders such as the Kelp Forest Alliance
- A sold-out industry night and gala dinner
- Ceremonies and engagements highlighting Indigenous connection, leadership and reconciliation
- Strong representation from Canadian seaweed researchers and innovators
This 25th edition of the triennial ISS celebrated 75 years of international collaboration promoted by the International Seaweed Association since the first symposium was held in Edinburgh, in 1952.
The organisers are now looking ahead to the 26th International Seaweed Symposium, which is set to take place in Qingdao at the end of April 2028, under the theme: “Seaweeds for Society and Ecosystems.”
