FVG is now able to provide coordinated aquatic health support including disease diagnostics and evidence based veterinary services.
Their laboratory in Portland, Maine utilizes state of the art molecular and culture methods and digital histopathology to deliver rapid disease surveillance and disease investigation services.
FVG will also provide biosecurity consultation, welfare and husbandry expertise and employee training and education to provide comprehensive fish health support to zebra fish facilities.
Zebrafish are used in biomedical research ranging from cancer and drug discovery to genetics and tissue regeneration. They present an attractive model for research because as they develop from embryo to fish their bodies are transparent so can be examined easily under a microscope, they share a large proportion of DNA with humans, live well in a variety of conditions and breed easily. The industry is rapidly expanding with several hundred facilities across the US and well over 1000 worldwide.
Speaking from Portland Maine, Technical Services Director of FVG, Hernan Pizarro, commented: “This is an exciting and progressive step for Fish Vet Group as we expand into an industry in need of the health, disease and welfare management services which we are well placed to provide. Our state of the art facilities, technical centers around the world and decades of combined experience make this a natural step for the group and we are excited for the opportunities this will present.
"Amid continued growth and importance of global aquaculture, this development ensures the Fish Vet Group continues to be placed at the forefront of our industry and is in a position to promote fish health and sustainability world wide.”
