Algal startup prepares for commercialisation

MiAlgae, a Scottish startup that grows algae using by-products from the whisky industry to make a product rich in omega-3, has announced the role as they build new revenue streams and promote business growth.

Chris Haacke brings extensive experience of the aquaculture and petfood sectors to the role

Haacke joins MiAlgae from French company Agronutris, who specialise in the rearing and transforming of insects into sustainable proteins and fats for animal nutrition, where he held the role of director of business development.

Haacke has a long history in aquaculture having worked in various commercial roles in the Pan Fish Group from 1992 to 2005, including sales and marketing director for Pan Fish Scotland, and then moved to a global marketing role with MSD Animal Health Aquaculture.

In 2017, he joined the animal nutrition sector, as global aquaculture lead for Corbion Algae ingredients. There he was responsible for the global aquaculture growth strategy, and strategic account management. As leader of the aquaculture business development team, he was dedicated to the commercial development of a groundbreaking new technology, taking it from a niche position to a mainstream ingredient, helping to support the continued sustainable growth of the aquaculture industry.

Founder and managing director of MiAlgae, Douglas Martin commented: “We are extremely excited to welcome Chris to the team. He has the experience and talent we need to take MiAlgae to the next phase of its growth”.
