VIV Asia, Aquatic Asia 2013: Opening Ceremony

THAILAND - VIV Asia 2013 and Aquatic Asia 2013 trade shows opened their doors yesterday, 13 March, with an opening ceremony attended by the agriculture ministers of the host country and the UK. 5m senior editor, Jackie Linden, reports from Bangkok.

In his Welcome Address at the joint opening ceremony of the two trade shows, Gerard Leeuwenburgh, Director of International Exhibitions of VNU Europe and Managing Director of VNU Exhibitions Asia-Pacific explained that this, the 11th VIV Asia event, marks the 22nd anniversary of the first show of its type in the capital city of Thailand, Bangkok.

He said: "VIV Asia has established itself as the 'must-attend' event in Asia for livestock industry professionals."

The six exhibition halls of the BITEC exhibition centre are full with 770 exhibitors representing 48 countries - led by companies from China, Thailand, US, the Netherlands and France - together with 10 individual country pavilions.

Among the highlights of the show, Mr Leeuwenburg mentioned the special areas, CropTech-FeedTech Asia, MeatTech Asia and a wide range of parallel events including conferences and seminars.

Thonghai Sridama, Director and Acting President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) added his welcome to the invited audience, explaining the importance of such events to the economy of the Kingdom.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Food at the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in the UK, The Rt Hon. David Heath, MP, said that more than 30,000 visitors from 100 counties are expected to attend the two events. He added that his own and the host country share in their high regard for the production and enjoyment of good food.

The Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand, Yukol Limlamthong, explained that agricultural efficiency and the reduction of waste receiving much attention in his country. He added that improved transport and logistics would help support trade with neighbouring countries so that Thailand maintains its position as a leader in animal production, green technology, veterinary care and provider of other goods and service for the region of Southeast Asia.

Following the ceremony, VIV Asia 2013 and Aquatic Asia 2013 were declared officially open. They continue at the BITEC exhibition centre in Bangkok until Friday (15 March).
