VIET NAM - Over one trillion VND ($70 million) has been allocated to develop the tra fish industry.

The Prime Minister has approved a scheme to develop tra fish production and consumption in the Mekong Delta through 2020.

The two-phase scheme will need 800 billion VND ($43 million) in investment capital in the first phase, lasting through 2015, and 540 billion VND ($29 million)in the second phase.

Under the scheme, the total area of tra fish aquaculture will be developed from 11,000 ha in 2015 to 13,000 ha in 2020 mainly in Can Tho City and An Giang, Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces.

Tra fish breeding establishments must be over 10 ha, according to the scheme, with encouragement given to processing establishments set up in breeding areas or local fishing centres.

By 2015, the Mekong delta will be able to provide disease-free, high-quality tra fish.

All tra fish for export and domestic consumption will be quarantined and certified for quality.
