With the flathead stocks in the Commonwealth Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF) in great shape, there is no better time to be out buying Australian flathead in the lead-up to Christmas.
“This is great news for families looking for fresh, healthy, local produce to put on their plates over Christmas,” said the Chair of AFMA, the Hon Norman Moore.
“By buying Australian, not only are you supporting local suppliers, but you can be assured that you are buying fish that are from a well-managed fishery.
“Fisheries scientists say the flathead fishery is in great shape.
“If families ask for Australian flathead over Christmas they can enjoy fresh fish with absolute confidence that it is sustainable.”
Simon Boag, CEO of the South East Trawl Fishing Industry Association (SETFIA), supported the call for Aussie fish this Christmas.
“With all the recent interest in the labelling of fish, if Australians walk into their seafood shop and demand Australian fish, they can be entirely happy that they’ve walked away with some of the freshest, most sustainable fish you can get your hands on anywhere on this planet,” said Mr Boag.
Ask for tiger or deepwater flathead, and you’ll be enjoying tasty fresh fish over the festive break that are local and will be there next time you want a feed.
Commonwealth managed fisheries are doing well. In fact, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences Fishery status report 2013-14 released in October this year showed that no fishery solely managed by the Commonwealth is subject to overfishing.
