The meeting was jointly organized by the South Pacific Commission, Mar Viva Foundation, and the National Fisheries and Aquaculture, and brought together Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Chile to work together in combating IUU fishing.
Regarding the importance of combating IUU fishing, Secretary of the Permanent Commission of the South Pacific (CPPS), María del Carmen Gonzalez said: "Illegal fishing is a scourge on humanity: affects food security, employment and affects the species. All countries have to wok together to combat it."
The International Affairs Sernapesca, Alejandro Covarrubias, said the aim of this workshop was to train inspectors on Southeast Pacific fishing techniques and strategies for the control of fishing activities and in particular, the Agreement on Measures of Port State Control, to prevent, deter and eliminate Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.
