Fishermen to get Low Environmental Impact Floats

ECUADOR - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP) via the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, is to distribute new floats which have a low environmental impact to artisanal fishermen of the Ecuadorian coast.

The Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Guillermo Moran, said that through this delivery the use of plastic containers, containers of lubricants and other items that are reused as floats in fishing operations will be eliminated.

Further, the new floats will decrease pollution to the environment.

In 2012 the government delivered 92,650 floats and fishing gear in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabi, Santa Elena, Guayas and El Oro.

This year, the Undersecretariat of Fisheries Resources floats deliver 80,000 cc 4500, chevron type, intended to catch large pelagics such as tuna and billfish.

The new floats were designed based on the needs expressed by the artisanal fishing sector.

The initial delivery will take place the first week of September 2013, in Manabi, Esmeraldas, El Oro, Santa Elena, Guayas
