Fish Farm Opens Floodgate in Collier County

Environment Post-harvest Politics +2 more

FLORIDA, US - It took a couple of years of Collier County hearings, and, finally, a court decision for Ashraf Fawzy. His Golden Gate Estates fish farm is underway. Are fish farms now going to be the latest trend in conversion from crop-driven agricultural land in Collier County? Asks I.M Stackell in a NaplesNews report.

Those involved can only speculate.

“One thing is certain in my mind: Whatever is allowed in the areas intended for conservancy — assuming they might actually be allowed for some reason — should be only the most carefully planned and logically probable to succeed, meaning a good business plan exists,” longtime Planning Commissioner Bob Murray told NaplesNews. “The problem with granting these types of zonings or uses is that they represent a precedent that makes turning another down darn near impossible.”

Melissa Zone, a principal planner with the county, said it’s difficult to predict the outcome of this type of petition.

“The aquaculture business is market driven,” Zone said. “In addition, there are so many factors related to this type of business.”

Those site constraints could include setbacks, proper zoning, environmental sensitivity, site topography and stormwater plans.
