Ecuador Develops Mariculture

ECUADOR - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries is looking to start up mariculture in Ecuador.

The Agriculture Minister, Javier Ponce Cevallos, said that in the country there is a need for the management and control of aquaculture activities to policies for the implementation of mariculture.

A meeting earlier this month of the Secretaries of State aimed to create a roadmap to develop mariculture in Ecuador. They also wish to establish environmental regulations in order to issue the permits and zoning to promote this activity.

The Minister stated that the country is open to private initiatives that may arise regarding the development of the sector, with the various commercial species being huayaipe, snapper, mullet, cobia, among others.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, representatives of the National Directorate of Aquatic Spaces (DIRNEA) of the Technical Secretariat of the Sea, National Fisheries Institute (INP), among others.

It was agreed that the responsibility for creating a script for species selection is the National Fisheries Institute (INP).
