Tuna Fishing Season Starts in Pacific Ocean

MEXICO - The purse seine tuna fishing season began again on the 19 January in marine waters under federal jurisdiction of the United Mexican States and international waters in the area of regulation of the IATTC in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) announced the lifting of the tuna fishing ban, allowing for tuna fishing to commence, in accordance with strict management measures.

This fishery is in third place of national fish production by volume, with 133,000 tons and its economic value is in the second place of production.

The average catch of tuna by the Mexican fleet in recent years has remained stable, reflecting the positive impact of conservation measures applied by Mexico under its international commitments in the field.
