Carlos Dominguez met in Brussels with MEPs to explain that the EU Mauritania fisheries agreement is unsatisfactory and is underused.
The Secretary-General stated: "The Government is not satisfied with a protocol that, 28 months after the start of trading, is still unsatisfactory as a whole."
Mr Dominguez explained that the fact that most of the Spanish fleet did not back to fish in Mauritanian fishing ground indicates that the agreement is not good for Spanish interests.
He also noted that, although some Spanish fleet segments have been forced to resort to fish for lack of alternatives, "that does not mean they're satisfied with the result of the agreement."
"In fact," he added, "one of the biggest concerns is the effect this terrible negotiation agreement might have on future agreements with Mauritania or other countries."
In this situation, Carlos Domínguez understands the need to convey to the European Commission the clear message that fisheries agreements are commercial agreements that have to involve benefit in exchange for financial compensation paid by the European Union and the owners of fishing vessels.
