The statement was based on laboratory tests conducted by BFAR and Local Government Units.

Visa Tan-Dimerin, BFAR region 10 director, said all types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered around the areas identified are not safe for human consumption, prohibiting the public to harvest, sell and buy.

However, squids and crabs are safe to eat provided that these are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.

The remaining coastal waters of Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte are still free from toxic red tides.
