Pure Salmon Technology has announced has announced that Mori Trust, one of Japan’s premier real estate and investment firms, has joined as a strategic investor in the 8F Aquaculture Fund Japan I LP, supporting one of Japan’s largest and most advanced land-based aquaculture projects.

Located in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, this pioneering initiative by Pure Salmon Japan – formerly known as Soul of Japan K.K.– aims to reshape the future of Atlantic salmon farming in Asia. The facility – currently under construction – will feature recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology developed by Pure Salmon Technology. The investment follows a USD 460 million funding round announced in February to complete the Tsu City facility.

This collaboration marks a critical milestone in Japan’s sustainable seafood development. By eliminating reliance on ocean-based farming, the land-based RAS system ensures biosecure, antibiotic-free salmon production, unaffected by marine pollution, parasites or climate-related disruptions.

The first harvest and shipment is scheduled for 2027, aligning with national goals to improve Japan’s seafood self-sufficiency. Currently, Japan imports 100 percent of its Atlantic salmon. This facility will directly support domestic demand for safe, fresh, high-quality and environmentally responsible seafood.

Errol Ahmed, chief executive officer of Pure Salmon Japan, commented in a press release:
“Mori Trust is a true partner who understands our vision and shares the belief that the aquaculture industry should be restructured into a more sustainable form. This investment is not only a fund-raising, but also a sign of our long-term commitment to food security, environmental responsibility and industrial transformative leadership.”

Beyond investment, the partnership with Mori Trust will enhance low-carbon infrastructure and advance decarbonisation goals through high-efficiency, sustainable aquaculture practices. Pure Salmon Japan and Mori Trust aim to advance land-based aquaculture in Japan by combining innovative technology with a shared focus on sustainability.
