Four star is the highest designation in the BAP third-party certification programme, signifying that a product originates from a BAP-certified processing plant, farm, hatchery and feed mill.
Marine Farm Tornagaleones became eligible to offer four-star BAP salmon with the recent certification of its Las Coloradas and Pisc. Los Chilcos hatcheries.
Granja Marine Tornagaleones’ processing plant in Puerto Montt, Chile, eight of its salmon farm sites and the feed mill from which it sources feed, EWOS Chile Alimentos Ltda., are already BAP-certified.
Jose Manuel Ureta, general manager of Marine Farm Tornagaleones, said: "This shows the commitment of our company with the development of responsible aquaculture based on best practices in every step of the production cycle.
"This new certification is highly recognized by our customers as it considers key elements of aquaculture such as the environment, social responsibility, animal welfare, food safety and traceability."
Additionally, Patagonia SeaFarms, the commercial arm of Marine Farm Tornagaleones in North America, is now fully capable of offering four-star BAP salmon, as all of its facilities are BAP certified.
Patagonia SeaFarms is a joint venture between two family-owned salmon-farming companies in Chile, Cultivos Yadran and Marine Farm Tornagaleones.
BAP is the world’s most comprehensive third-party certification programme, with standards encompassing environmental responsibility, social responsibility, food safety, animal health and welfare and traceability. There were a total of 1,599 BAP-certified facilities worldwide at the end of January, including 365 processing plants, 992 farms, 167 hatcheries and 75 feed mills.
