The activity - an initiative of the provincial bureau of aquatic products and the Sanmenxia municipal bureau of agriculture - aims to promote breeding and protection and to maintain the diversity and ecological balance of aquatic resources.

Trout and other fish are often raised from eggs, becoming fry and fingerlings and then transported to streams where they are released.

The fry are also often raised in long, shallow concrete tanks filled with fresh stream water and fed commercial fish food in pellets.
