PHILIPPINES - About 50 fishermen in the Philippines are beneficiaries of the government's programme providing free fingerlings and feeds and technical assistance.

Nerisa Dango, Agriculturist II of the Provincial Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Office here said that this programme under the Community Participatory Action Research has helped 50 fisherfolks in Barangays Hapid and Sanafe here who have undergone training early this year.

Dango said that before this programme was implemented, fishponds in these barangays were almost abandoned but when the owners participated in seminars and trainings provided by the agriculture office here, they were inspired and started improving their fishponds. She informed that the fisherfolks were able to have additional source of income and even employed standbys as helpers.

With the Participatory Rural Appraisal, the programme funded by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Aquaculture Research, seeks to lessen input but increase production. The PRA will also eliminate individualism in them because we will train them on how to organize themselves into cooperative, Dango said.
