On Wednesday, 24 October, Ghislain Vienneau of Tracadie-Sheila, New Brunswick, was found guilty of illegally fishing striped bass, contrary to and in violation of the Maritime Provinces Fishery Regulations. He had seven striped bass in his possession. Judge Donald Leblanc ordered Vienneau to pay a fine of C$1,000.
Striped bass fisheries are closed for conservation purposes in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. In November 2004, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) assessed the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence population of striped bass as threatened.
Anyone wishing to report suspicious fishing activity or habitat violations is asked to either contact their nearest Fisheries and Oceans Canada office, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or visit the Crime Stoppers in New Brunswick programme, or text TIP212 to CRIMES (274637).
