The I3-4-Seaweed project, funded by the EU, has launched a €1.8 million funding call to support up to 30 SMEs working in macroalgal production and biotechnology. Successful applicants can secure grants of up to €60,000, with the call open until 22 October. Eligible applicants must have innovations at least at Technology Readiness Level 6 (prototype tested in relevant conditions) and be based in designated regions across 18 EU countries.

Applicants may apply under one of two strands: Strand A, Macroalgal Production and Strand B, Macroalgal Biotechnology and Downstream Applications. These strands are designed to address sectoral challenges and strengthen the macroalgal value chain by supporting product and process testing, optimisation and the development of innovative processing technologies. Priority focus areas include hatchery innovations, seaweed-based meat alternatives, cosmetic applications, biofertiliser and biostimulant development, seaweed-based food products and integrating digital twin technologies for offshore aquaculture.

In addition to funding, selected teams will receive training, mentorship, access to online webinars and networking opportunities, including participation in an event organized by the I3-4-Seaweed consortium where they will pitch their innovations.

Registrations to two informative webinars for the open call are now open: 27 August and 8 October.
