Despite having over 3,500 km of coastline it is thought that Morocco’s annual aquaculture output is less than 2,000 tonnes and the new project aims to redress this.
The project, which is being run in partnership with France’s Ministry of Agriculture, seeks to support Morocco’s National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture (ANDA) in its objectives to kick start the country’s aquaculture sector.
According to Morocco World News, the country’s Minister of Agriculture, Mohamed Sadiki emphasised his desire to scale up investments in marine aquaculture. Meanwhile Patricia Llombart Cussac, the EU’s Ambassador to Morocco, said the partnership will allow the creation of over 4,000 direct jobs in addition to indirect jobs in the aquaculture sector.
The paper added that France’s ambassador to Morocco, Helene Le Gal, described the project as having promise “in terms of developing good practices in the aquaculture sector.”
