Aquaculture for all

Bacolod Fil-Chinese businessmen gear towards aquaculture

PHILIPPINES - Re-elected President of the Bacolod Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (BFCCCI) James Chua bared future investment plans that will transform the age-old Chinese retail business into full diversification.

Chua clarified, however, that these are his personal plans for now as this has not yet been discussed with the board members of the BFCCCI.

“With some of my colleagues, we are bent towards the development of the ‘abalone’ export, as aquaculture is freed from the country’s policy on land reform and that the export market is immensely vast in China alone.” Chua said.

“No less than the Secretary of Agriculture Arthur Yap is encouraging aquaculture such as these ‘abalone’ plans of ours than investing in sugar of which economies of scales cannot be achieved with land reform in place,” Chua added.

Chua was following President Gloria Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) Monday, saying, “That the direction is apparently towards retention. While the President will ‘reform land reform’, how she will do it is not spelled out.”

Chua explained that Negros has natural endowments in the abalone culture development as its sea terrains have plenty of coves. “Studies are very encouraging, Negros coves abound all over the island,” he said.
