Raon Bada has achieved the world's first ASC certification for olive flounder, known regionally as Gwangeo. This milestone achievement is significant both for South Korea's developing aquaculture industry and for Raon Bada as it demonstrates its commitment to driving transformative change.
Raon Bada has also made history as the first company in South Korea to successfully implement Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology for olive flounder farming. In addition to its use of RAS technology, the company utilises eco-friendly compound feed throughout its farming process, and has adopted antibiotic-free and chemical-free production methods.
"Raon Bada will lead the way in preserving the environment through sustainable farming technology and providing reliable seafood to consumers. This ASC certification is just the first step, and we will continue to elevate Korea's position in the global seafood market through innovative technology and responsible farming practices," said Yoon Ji-hyun, co-CEO at Raon Bada, in a press release.
These achievements of Raon Bada could mark an important milestone for South Korea's olive flounder farming industry, which is significant both nationally and globally. The fish accounts for 65 percent of marine-farmed fish consumption and 50 percent of fish production in the country. Additionally, South Korea accounts for as much as 70 percent of global olive flounder production, producing up to 46,000 metric tonnes per year.
