A new website that draws on over 300 peer-reviewed studies and claims “to detail the downside of salmon farming” has been launched by two wild salmon conservation organisations this week.

The Atlantic Salmon Federation and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund have long been critical of salmon farming

The organisations hope their new site will encourage consumers of farmed salmon to reconsider the sustainability of the sector

Called salmon.info, the concept for the site was drawn up by The Atlantic Salmon Federation and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund and is billed as “a comprehensive evidence-based resource for media professionals, policymakers, and conservationists about the harmful effects of the salmon farming practices that produce one of the world’s most consumed fish”.

“The salmon farming industry claims to be one of the most sustainable proteins on the planet with minimal environmental impact,” said Neville Crabbe, executive director of communications at the Atlantic Salmon Federation, in a press release. "Our goal for salmon.info is to provide accurate, accessible information on things the salmon farming industry doesn’t talk about so that consumers who are eating farmed salmon are informed.”

The organisations are keen to use the website to highlight the volume of wild fish consumed by the salmon sector, the high mortality rates and the impact that salmon farms can have on wild salmon.

“For too long, the public has heard only one side of the story when it comes to farmed salmon. With salmon.info, we now have a single, accessible platform that brings together the best available science to help journalists, policymakers, and concerned citizens understand the full impact of open-net pen salmon farming. It’s a long-overdue tool for transparency – and a critical step forward for marine conservation,” said Ian Huschle, a board member of the North Atlantic Salmon Fund.

Key features of salmon.info include:

  • Access to over 300 vetted sources that provide in-depth insights into the impacts of open-net pen salmon farming.
  • An AI assistant that can search the site’s database and answer questions from visitors.
  • Intuitive, user-friendly design with plain-language summaries of all major topics.
