Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, Senator Richard Colbeck, said Walker Seafoods’ recognition for sustainable practices reinforces the quality of Australian fisheries management and the positive intent of our fishing industry.
“I congratulate husband and wife team Pavo and Heidi at Walker Seafoods for taking the initiative to obtain MSC certification for their catch,” Senator Colbeck said.
“Fishers are some of the very best conservationists when it comes to the health of our oceans; they depend on it for their livelihoods and want to ensure its sustainability for generations to come.
“This can provide consumers with increased confidence that they are purchasing sustainably caught seafood when they shop locally.”
“Australian fisheries are considered among the most sustainable in the world. They are managed based on the best available science and we are committed to ensuring this continues into the future.
“The recent ABARES Fisheries status reports showed that fisheries are improving under this Government and no solely Commonwealth managed fisheries are subject to overfishing. This excellent result is a combination of Australia’s strong fisheries management regime and excellent work by industry.
MSC offers a voluntary certification scheme which is based on the core principles of healthy fish populations, reduced impact on marine ecosystems and effective management of the fishery.
