The official launch of the Plan was given by Minister Ramo Orestes Ortez, the FAO Representative in El Salvador, Alan González, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Hugo Flores and the Director of the Center for Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture (CENDEPESCA), Gustavo Portillo.
"This plan is designed to be a guide of action of our work and will give impetus to the sector," said Minister Ortez.
The Plan, which includes input from key stakeholders, is the result of the policy review and strategic planning of the Central Government, the MAG through the Directorate General of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the National Policy on Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The Plan was also developed with participation of those working in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, allowing for the identification of issues affecting the sectors and what possible actions could be introduced to solve them.
In implementing the Plan, the objective is to promote the growth and development of the economic, social, tourism and environmental aspects of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
To guide the development of the sector, the ministry has taken as reference the "Five Year Development Plan 2014-2019: El Salvador Productive, Polite and Security" and the Institutional Strategic Plan "Agriculture for Good Living 2014-2019".
To address challenges, 30 projects have been organised in seven programmes and in eight strategic areas, which will be implemented in the short (1-3 years), medium (3-5 years) and long term (5-10 years ).
The total planned investment for the Plan is $69,690,508, and sources of funding will come from the General Budget of the Nation and external cooperation, among others.
For the period 2016-2030, the implementation of the Plan will take effect on the following indicators:
- Increase fish production in 14,000 t.
- Increased aquaculture production in 8,000 t.
- Increase per capita consumption at a point (8.9 kg / capita / year).
- Increased institutional coverage at 100%.
- Three new fisheries identified to promote the growth of fish production.
- Three new innovative products of high added value available on the market.
