Bertie Armstrong, SFF chief executive said:“This document offers an overly gloomy view and certainly doesn’t bear any reflection on the true situation in Scotland where fishermen have been at the forefront of maintaining and increasing the sustainability of their operations, which in turn will reduce discarding.
“The focus of this document on halting discards attacks the symptoms rather than the actual disease – which is the inadequacy of the current regulations. This doesn’t mean there should be increasing regulation and restriction, but instead a more intelligent approach to fisheries management, which Scottish fishermen are currently spearheading.”
