Organic aquaculture gets boost with joint initiatives

PHILIPPINES - Organic aquaculture is getting a boost with the joint initiatives of Negros Occidental, the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), German Development Services (DED) and other partners in looking into the feasibility of such practice in the country.

At the 1st Philippine Aquaculture Symposium in Bacolod City, which ends today, Dr. Uwe Scholz, program adviser of GTZ Environment and Rural Development-Coastal Fisheries Resource Management, said the participants were introduced to the concepts, benefits and trend of organic aquaculture and given an overview on the principles of organic certification.

In today's sessions, the more than a hundred participants, who include aquaculture stakeholders such as producers, processors and feedmillers, will identify current limiting factors which obstruct the promotion of the organic aquaculture sector and develop and action plan and possible pilot programs for the Visayas.
