Aquaterra omega-3 oil is derived from genetically modified omega-3 canola and was developed for inclusion in aquafeed as a novel source of DHA and EPA. It’s the world’s first plant-based source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and, according to Nuseed, one to two hectares of the crop can produce as much DHA as 10,000 kg of wild fish. Its use in salmon feeds was approved by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority in 2023;

Vikene has worked for 25 years with Skretting Group, most recently serving as commercial director.

“Aquaterra is going to be vital to stabilising the omega-3 supply chain. I am delighted to join Nuseed in introducing this groundbreaking, plant-based ingredient to Norway and Europe,” said Vikene in a press release.

Studies conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (Nofima) have demonstrated that salmon that are fed Aquaterra diets produce higher quality fillets with increased omega-3 content.

Benita Boettner, global GM for Nuseed Nutritional, said: “Ms Vikene’s deep understanding of omega-3 supply challenges and the trust she has earned as an industry veteran are a welcome addition to our growing team.”

Pablo Berner will continue to support Nuseed Nutritional as the aquaculture lead for the Americas, where his relationships and expertise have led to the successful commercialisation of Aquaterra.
