Indonesian company PT Bali Maya Permai is the latest seafood company to participate in the tuna conservation efforts of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF).

ISSF participating companies work with the foundation to advocate for improved tuna fishery management, fund scientific advancements through research and expert analysis, and take direct action to encourage the adoption of responsible fishing practices.

One of Indonesia’s top canned fish producers, PT Bali Maya Permai Food Canning Industry was established in 1978 and will be an associate-level participating company in ISSF.

“ISSF is excited to welcome PT Bali Maya Permai. We look forward to working alongside another premier Indonesian company to improve and maintain the long term health of tuna stocks,” ISSF President Susan Jackson said. “Collaborating with a variety of stakeholders, including a diverse and global group of seafood companies, is the backbone of ISSF’s international work to improve tuna fisheries management norms and promote sustainable practices.”

All ISSF participating companies are independently audited via comprehensive methods that assess compliance with ISSF’s conservation measures, the results of which are shared annually in the ISSF compliance report and published in conjunction with the ISSF annual report. The most recent audit from the fall of 2016 showed a 95.6 percent conformance rate with conservation measures among the 25 firms that were audited.

ISSF launched in 2009 with eight participating companies and today has 28 industry partners. These partners comprise approximately 75% of the world’s tuna processing capacity — including well-known brands produced and sold in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Pacific Islands and Asia.

Asian Alliance International, an ISSF participating company since 2011, recently ended its participation with ISSF.
