The increase in figures of exports of “Label Rouge” accredited Scottish farmed salmon is welcome news in advance of the three-day European Seafood Exposition (ESE) starting in Brussels on 23 April, when Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO) will exhibit as part of the Scottish Pavilion to promote the country’s seafood.
Scottish farmed salmon became the first non-French product and the first fish to obtain the prestigious French government’s Label Rouge mark of distinction in 1992. For over ten years it was the only non-French food to meet the quality scheme’s rigorous standards. To receive the Label Rouge accolade from the French government a product must demonstrate superior taste.
Scott Landsburgh, Chief Executive of SSPO said: “We are delighted that these figures reflect the hard work of our members in producing and exporting the highest quality Scottish salmon. In a time of economic difficulties, one of the best tools Scotland has to distinguish itself, grow its economy and create jobs is to produce premium products such as Scottish farmed salmon. “
He went on to say: “At the ESE, we will be working with our members, as well as associates at Seafood Scotland and Scottish Development International, to show that Scottish seafood is the best in the world. We are very proud that Scottish farmed salmon is Scotland’s biggest food export but, at a time of increased competition, from countries around the world. It is important we work together to maintain Scotland’s reputation for quality in order to grow this vital sector and protect this iconic food.”
