Targeted at sustaining populations of 11 fish species the closed period is based on research from the National Fisheries Institute and will from April 21 to June 20 each year.
The period will allow for refuge areas to be set up and key species young fry stocked.
According to the fisheries chart the dam is important due it being home to two species of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus and aureus), seven carp; including pot bellies, mirror, bigheaded, silver and herbivore and largemouth bass and Ictalurus catfish.
