Chinese province bans the purchase, sale and use of Ecuadorean shrimp due to Covid-19 concerns

China’s northern Shanxi province announces a ban on the sale, purchase or use of shrimp imports from Ecuador in an effort to control the novel coronavirus.

Reuters reports that the Shanxi provincial State Administration for Market Regulation announced the ban on 26 August. The move comes after traces of Covid-19 were detected on the inner wall of shipping containers that were transporting shrimp exports from Ecuador to China.

Chinese officials have since ramped up coronavirus testing on frozen food imports to stop the proliferation of the virus. However, the WHO and USDA have reported that there is limited evidence of food-borne transmission of Covid-19.
