Cabinet Approves Spanish Marine Strategies

SPAIN - The Council of Ministers has approved the set of environmental targets for the Spanish marine strategies. With this approval, the first three stages of marine strategies, that will shape, protect and promote the sustainable development of the sea in the coming years, can take place.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment is the competent authority to implement the Spanish Marine Strategy Framework (2008/56/EC).

The objective is to achieve a good environmental status of the marine environment by 2020.

The strategies are cyclical action plans, with five consecutive steps: initial assessment, definition of good environmental status, establishment of environmental objectives, implementation of monitoring programs and implementation of programs of measures.

With the agreement of the Council of Ministers, Spain completed the first three phases (assessment, environmental status, environmental objectives) of the strategies of the five Spanish marine boundaries (North Atlantic, South Atlantic, Canary, Balearic and Levantine-Strait and Alboran) .

From 1 June to 15 July, 2012 all documents relating to these first three phases of marine strategies were publicly available on the website of MAGRAMA to facilitate public participation. entation of all marine strategies.
