Vietnam ranks sixth among top ten aqua-producers

VIETNAM - Vietnam ranks sixth among the worlds top ten aquaculture producers, according to a report released recently by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

China tops the list with the volume and earnings from aquatic products making up 70 percent and 51 percent of the world’s total, respectively. India comes second, making up 4.2 percent in terms of the volume and value.

The area under aquaculture in Vietnam is rather large, according to statistics from the Vietnam Ministry of Fisheries. Currently, shrimp rearing acreage in 23 coastal provinces across the country reaches roughly 660,000 hectare, mostly for exports.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese Prime Minister has approved a program to boost seafood exports till 2010 and orientations till 2020. The fisheries sector targets to earn US$4-4.5 billion from exports with an annual growth rate of nine percent by 2010.
