The purpose of this prohibition is to conserve tuna resources.
During the closures, vessels are prohibited from fishing in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO), as recommended and indicated in resolution C-12-1 of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC).
For the four-class vessels an exception is made, they may make only one fishing trip after 30 days of closure, but only with an observer from the International Observer Programme on board.
Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Guillermo Moran, said these measures ensure the long-term sustainability of tuna stocks and other marine resources associated with this fishery in the EPO.
