It's generally accepted that PGI status gives products a substantial boost in high-value markets.
AST's objection to award of PGI to Scottish wild salmon, which you can read here, was based on the fact that the bulk of wild salmon currently being brought to market in Scotland is from mixed stock fisheries.
The reply which we received from the Government stated that our reasons for objection were invalid, since only comments relating to use of trade marks and descriptions could be considered.
In compliance with Article 5.5 of Council Regulation (EC) No. 510/2006 Defra are required to inform interested parties within the UK of this decision, and to provide a final opportunity for any comments. The closing date for such comments is 28th February.
Scottish Wild Salmon PGI Designation Update
UK - The Government has announced that the application for Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, to which the Atlantic Salmon Trust (AST) and others objected strongly, meets the relevant criteria, and will be submitted to the European Commission for final approval.
